Roberto Mancini confirms that Italy starts a new era against Germany tomorrow in the League of Nations and wants to rediscover the magic, but warns especially in attack that he can not invent players’.
The League of Nations campaign kicks off on Saturday at the Stadio Dall’Ara in Bologna. Azzurri will then face Hungary on June 7, England on June 11 and visit Germany on June 14.
After the desperately disappointing 3-0 loss to Argentina in the Finalissima, this is the moment where Mancini sets a line under the victory of EURO 2020 and starts a new era with fresh faces.
“Winning the Euro is part of the magic of that tournament, now we have to start again and find that magic once again,” the Italian coach told a news conference.
“In football, everyone is behind you when you win and when you lose, almost everyone turns against you. Only so it is. We paid a price against Argentina for losing so many players. It wasn’t exactly a great team at first and the injuries did the rest. Argentina is in better shape now and maybe for the first time in three and a half years we found a team that really dominated us, at least in the second half. It takes time, we could not invent new players right away, we knew it would be a difficult process. It will be a total restoration, many of the players have already left and were in no form to play four games, it would just create even more problems in September,” he said.
Marco Verratti, Lorenzo Insigne, Federico Bernardeschi, Emerson Palmieri, Jorginho, Giorgio Chiellini, Manuel Lazzari and Mattia Zaccagni have all been sent home, either due to injury or to rest.
