Former well-known footballers, now football experts, Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher insist that Alexis Sanchez did not deserve to be sent off in red in last night’s (Wednesday) match of Inter against Liverpool.
Sanchez, who was shown a yellow card in the first half for a reckless intervention against Thiago Alcantara, was given another card just a minute after Lautaro Martinez scored to give Inter hope of a comeback.
However, the 1-0 victory saw Inter eliminated from the Champions League with an overall score of 2-1.
The 33-year-old won the ball, but then grabbed the foot of midfielder Fabinho and was shown a red card by the referee, who removed him from the game.
After the match, CBS Sport experts Thierry Henry and Jamie Carrgher agreed that Sanchez’s punishment was unfortunate.
“I’m sorry. If you played football you realize it was not and I think sometimes the referee just follows the instruction book.”
“What should you do? He takes the ball, your foot will rise high because he is taking the ball away.”
“We see in full speed recovery that you do not have time to remove the leg by removing the ball. If the referee plays football, it’s not even yellow,” said Henry.
“Sometimes a foul or a situation where I probably have less sympathy was if Alexis would win the ball with his nails. He does not win the spiked ball, he wins it with his foot that has to go somewhere.”
“It’s not that high on the foot, it’s on the ankle or on the shoes. Maybe it’s just a foul and that’s debatable.”
“The fact that he got into his shoe is not close to a yellow card, but you can argue that the two fouls together are probably a red card,” said Carragher.
Otherwise, Arsene Wenger has also stated that Sanchez’s card came after Fabinho ‘cheated’.
