The new Chelsea owners remain eager to sign Ousmane Dembele from Barcelona this summer and plan to reopen talks with the Frenchman if he is still available after his contract expires, reports 90min.
The Blues were leading the race to sign the Frenchman on a free transfer this summer as his Camp Nou contract expires on June 30, but sanctions imposed on Roman Abramovich have prevented them from negotiating any transfer of the player, leaving them they blocked to make an offer for the 25-year-old.
American Todd Boehly is convinced that his group is close to finalizing the takeover of the club and is keen to start working on refreshing the team, and one of their most pressing concerns is Dembele’s landing as a free agent.
Both Chelsea and PSG made offers in January to sign him with the Barcelona winger, but a deal was not close, as the player wanted to wait until the end of the season.
Camp Nou officials were prepared to renew Dembele’s contract, but the economic situation at the club does not seem to allow it. Talks have continued since then, but president Joan Laporta has confessed that they are struggling to cope with the fat offer that Dembele has accepted from other clubs.
Chelsea will try to continue with official talks after the sale of the club is confirmed by the British government and sources have said for 90min that they hope Stamford Bridge is Dembele’s favorite destination, but they remain stuck to make an offer and instead of this they should look to find a solution as soon as possible.
PSG’s offer remains on the table and 90 minutes can confirm that Bayern Munich has opened talks with Dembele’s representatives in the hope of bringing him back for a second Bundesliga adventure.
It was Dembele’s form with Borussia Dortmund that gave him a successful move to Barcelona in 2017, but injuries have prevented him from reaching the same levels.
The winger has excelled under new Barcelona coach Xavi and currently has 13 assists from 20 appearances in La Liga this year, but the former midfielder’s presence on the bench does not seem enough to convince Dembele to stay.
