Arsenal and Tottenham may not qualify for the Champions League even if they finish in fourth place

Arsenal are on track to finish in the top four, but, even if they, or Tottenham Hotspur rivals, reach it, they could lose qualification for the Champions League next season.

The race for the top four has sometimes felt like a race that none of the contenders wanted to win, as each conceded points at crucial moments.

Arsenal’s good form has recently catapulted them to the lead, as they now lead Manchester United in fifth place with a point advantage and three games less.

The Spurs are just three points behind their London neighbors and, although they have played one game more than Mikel Arteta’s team, still have to face their local rival clubs in the derby match.

However, both teams may be left out of the European elite race, as their qualification is not as simple as it seems, as rivals United and West Ham are also in the race.

If United and West Ham win the Champions League or Europa League, then it would not matter who would finish in fourth place, as they would not qualify for the Champions League next season.

England takes four places for matches each year and this could increase to five if someone outside the top four wins one of UEFA’s two best matches.

However, if two teams outside the top four win the races, then that cannot be increased to six teams, and that means someone has to lose, which would be fourth place.
