Paulo Dybala will miss Juventus’ match against Villarreal tomorrow night, the latest example of a long history of being unlucky for the Champions League for the Argentine
The former Palermo footballer joined the whites in the summer of 2015 and has appeared in all seven seasons of the Champions League since then. In 52 games he has scored 18 goals and made three assists, but has consistently been unlucky to miss the key games for the Torino team.
During the 2015/16 season, Dybala was crucial in the first leg of the 1/8 finals against Bayern Munich, scoring one goal until they drew 2-2 at home. He missed the return match due to an injury and Juventus lost 4-2 in extra time.
The next season, the Argentine striker was the key player in the first quarterfinal match where he scored twice against Barcelona. He then failed to make an impact for all of the next matches until the final and did nothing in the loss to Real Madrid in Cardiff.
In the 2017/18 season, Dybala was sent off in the red in the quarter-finals against Real Madrid after receiving two yellow cards, which made him watch the horror of the Spanish team that secured qualification in the last minutes during the match at the Santiago Bernabeu.
A year later, the former Palermo striker barely played in the two quarter-final matches against Ajax, due to an injury, where he played only 60 minutes in both games.
During Maurizio Sarri’s time on the bench, Dybala would play just 13 minutes in the second leg of the 1/8 final against Lyon, a substitution that came precisely because of an injury.
Finally, last season. In the first match of the 1/8 finals against Porto, Dybala was on the bench and did not play in the second match due to an injury.
His absence in the match against Villarreal is the last match of his long unfortunate history in this match.
