A new race has apparently started at Manchester United between Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo over the captain’s stripe, following the arrival of Ralf Rangnick as captain.
Maguire is showing poor form this season, while Manchester United have stayed away from targets, despite summer arrivals like Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane.
According to the Mirror, Maguire will have to hand over the captain’s ribbon to Ronaldo. In a conversation between the coach and the two players, it is reported that the German wants to relieve the pressure on the center-back.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s authority is huge in the locker rooms and Rangnick has asked the Portuguese star to mentor young players like Jadon Sancho, Scott McTominay and Marcus Rashford.
“Initially, Ronaldo asked the players to support Maguire. “But the problem is that the manager now wants Ronaldo to mentor all these new players,” the sources told The Mirror.
According to The Mirror, the belief in Manchester United’s locker room is that Maguire will be replaced by Ronaldo as captain in the near future.
