At least one person is on Wayne Rooney’s side.

Rooney’s wife, and mother of his three children, Coleen, has defended her husband from Twitter trolls following the latest wave of criticism for the England and Manchester United captain.

In another dig from a Twitter user, Wayne’s lucrative pay packet was again alluded to:

Wayne’s supposed struggles at club and international level – he has one goal through 12 appearances this season – culminated in a section of the Wembley home crowd jeering his efforts in Saturday’s flat 2-0 defeat of Malta.

The latest reports are the booing brigade’s requests will be heeded, and Wayne will be dropped from the starting lineup by interim manager Gareth Southgate for Tuesday’s trip to Slovenia as England seeks a fourth-consecutive win in World Cup qualifying.

This expected decision follows his bench-warming duties at United over the past three matches. After deploying Wayne in a No. 10 role (similar to where he’s been fielded for England), Jose Mourinho has now opted for Juan Mata in that position to some early signs of improvement to the team’s attacking play.

Wayne has been on United’s books since 2004 when he moved from Everton for a then-record fee for a teenager. He made his England debut at 17, and has since amassed 53 international goals – an all-time high for the Three Lions.
